Trinity, Edward Knippers
13" x 20"
Woodcut in two colors
The 15th Century carving of an angel holding the dead Christ (the Sacrifice of
God) in the presence of the other two Persons of the Trinity holds a poignant
grace that is captivating. Making a two-dimensional object (a woodcut) in
response to the sculpture's gentle elegance has been greatly rewarding as I
have tried to interpret this 15th Century Master's intent through a different
medium to a different world. Different world, yes. Yet it is art that allows us
to recognize the commonalties of humanity. The body and human nature somehow
remain the same. This is why Christ's sacrifice is still as relevant today as
it was in the 15th Century - as relevant as it was in the First Century.
