Mystical Marriage by Tanja ButlerOriginal limited edition 10" x 14" print on 18" x 25" archival paper.
My response to Agnolo Gaddi's image of the coronation of the Virgin was to
reinterpret the theme as that of the mystical marriage of Christ and his bride,
the church. The figure types and textile patterns have an African source in
this interpretation. Christ displays his wounded side, which exposes his heart.
The winged angels clustered in the foreground of Gaddi's painting have become a
bird, referring to the phoenix (symbolizing Christ's resurrection), the pelican
(thought to feed its young with blood from its breast), and the early Christian
eucharistic symbol of birds drinking from a vessel or fountain.
